Viking Oven Burner Not Lighting? 7 Common Reasons!

Viking gas burners are well known for their performance. But sometimes you can’t avoid using them more than once a week.

You’re about to make your favorite dish or dinner for the guests. But, all of a sudden the burner is not lightning. That can be both frustrating and embarrassing.

Sometimes they don’t light up or stall out. And, this can be caused by either or a combination of several problems.

So, what’s the reason behind the Viking oven burner not lighting?

A faulty igniter is the most common reason behind the burner not working. Other common causes include a faulty knob, gas valve issues, a faulty thermostat, and so on. Also, sometimes the reason can be clogged burner elements. In that case, the Viking needs cleaning to work properly.

Not all Viking burners work exactly the same. Knowing exactly what is wrong with your gas range can help you solve your problem faster. We’ll explore all the reasons along with solutions throughout the article. Are you ready?

Viking Oven Burner Not Lightning? 7 Common Reasons

viking oven burner not lighting

Let’s start by discussing the common reason as I did with the nest thermostat earlier. I’ve also provided solutions for making your Viking oven burner work again.

So, let’s begin with the most common reason and we’ll gradually move toward the least common ones.

Reason 1: Problems With Gas Supply

If your oven burner is not working, the first thing you should check is the gas supply. If the gas supply has issues, the burner won’t light due to no gas. Sometimes the gas supply leaks or becomes clogged, resulting in gas odor and a low flame.

Solution: Change the Gas Supply

If you know how to change or fix the gas supply issues do it yourself. But remember these precautions:

Precautions:

  • Make sure you’ve disconnected the power supply properly.
  • Wear protective hand gloves.
  • Check the circuit breaker status, and make sure it’s off.

If you’re not sure how to do it, consider hiring a professional. Dealing with an oven burner without safety measurements or proper knowledge can be dangerous.

If your gas supply is okay, move to the next step.

Reason 2: Defective Ignitor

If your gas supply is working properly the reason might be a defective ignitor. The ignitor is the crucial element of an oven burner that helps to produce fire. A knob activates the ignitor to fire the oven. Hence, if the ignitor is faulty the burner won’t work.

Solution: Replace the Ignitor.

You can replace an oven ignitor by yourself as it doesn’t require any rocket science. However, you should identify whether the ignitor needs replacing or not.

So, how to know if the ignitor needs replacement?

If the ignitor shows discoloration of any kind or has a bad smell then it needs replacement. To check whether the ignitor is properly functioning or not, turn the burner on. When the igniter heats up, it turns orange and gets hot. If nothing is happening you need to replace the ignitor.

Before replacing the ignitor there are safety measures you must take. These are

Precautions:

  • After opening the oven if you smell gas DO NOT attempt to change the ignitor by yourself. It is likely that gas has leaked from the oven and needs to be dealt with immediately.
  • You should call 911 immediately if you smell an intense gas smell after opening the burner.

Now that you know the precautions, proceed with replacing the ignitor. You’ll need some tools and equipment as follows:

ToolsEquipment
ScrewdriverNew Ignitor
Circuit board testerWires and nuts

Now, follow the below steps carefully,

Step 1: Remove the power cord and turn off the circuit breaker.

Step 2: Use the circuit tester to cross-check that the circuit breaker is off. Now, open the burner cover and remove the old ignitor using the screwdriver.

Step 3: Install the new ignitor according to your burner’s model and connect the wires.

Step 4: Screw all the nuts firmly and make sure you use metal nuts. It’s because plastic nuts will melt when the igniter heats up.

Congratulations! Now you’ve got the ignitor replaced. A good ignitor can last up to three to four years of use.

Reason 3: Faulty Knob

If the ignitor is clicking fine it’s time to check the knob. If the knob is not working properly it will fail to activate the ignitor.

Solution: Replace the Knob

Knobs vary depending on the model you’re using. So, find the knob that is compatible with the Viking model you’re using. Replacing a knob is pretty simple. In case you don’t know how to replace one, hire an expert. See whether it fixes the problem or not.

If the knob is not the source of the problem then move to the next reason.

Reason 4: Clogged Burner Element

The burner elements may clog and get dirty over time if not cleaned occasionally. Dirty or clogged burner elements prevent the proper gas flow to the burner. As a result, it might not work all of a sudden when you need it the most.

Solution: Clean Regularly

You should clean the burner elements regularly or at least occasionally. You can use soapy water with a bit of alcohol to clean off the grease. Additionally, you try using an all-purpose cleaner agent to get rid of grease and dirt easily.

Reason 5: Issues With the Gas Valve

There is also a possibility that the gas valve in your oven is malfunctioning. If the gas valve is off there’ll be no gas supply to the burner. When I repair or replace a gas valve, I sometimes forget to turn it back on.

Solution: Check the Gas Valve Status

Check whether the gas valve is turned on or not. Sometimes the gas valve can have issues with the pipe. Make sure the pipes are not clogged with anything.

Reason 6: Faulty Thermostat Or Gas Element

You might be wondering what does the thermostat on a stove do? right

The thermostat is a crucial element of a burner that helps the burner to regulate temperature. It cycles the temperature inside the burner to maintain the desired temperature. A faulty thermostat will be unable to produce heat cycles and regulate it.

Thus, a faulty thermostat can be the reason your oven burner is not working.

Solution: Identify and Fix the Thermostat

I can’t read minds, to be honest. But, you might be asking yourself, how to know if your oven thermostat is bad?

We’re all familiar with multimeters. If not, you’ll need a multimeter to check the thermostat’s status. Once you get a multimeter, follow the below steps.

Step 1: Take the multimeter and make sure it’s calibrated.

Step 2: Set the lowest ohm value on the multimeter.

Step 3: Now, connect the multimeter to the thermostat. If the multimeter reads zero or close to zero, the thermostat is working properly.

So, that is all about the reasons and possible fixes for the Viking oven burner. Unfortunately, the solutions above didn’t fix the issue.

Still Not Fixed? Hire a Professional

If your burner is still not lighting up there might be a more complicated issue. In that case, hire a professional who will identify and fix the issue for you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Why won’t my Viking oven heat up?

A faulty power supply could be the cause of your Viking oven not heating up. The electric burners need electric flow to produce heat. Power outages can occur if the power cord is broken or leaks. In that case, replace the power cord with a new one.

How long do Viking stoves last?

Gas stoves can last up to 15 years, whereas electric stoves last up to 13 years. Because they are less prone to errors, gas stoves tend to last longer. Gas stoves are less vulnerable to electrical affairs. But, electrical stoves are vulnerable to excess current, ionizing factors, or short circuits.

How do I know if my stove fuse is broken?

Broken fuses are visually identifiable. Find out where the fuse is located. The fuse locations can vary depending on the model you’re using. Normally, it’s located on the top under a glass cover. If it looks visibly okay use a multimeter to verify.
